TEOS is mainly used as a silica precursor in the production of glass, coatings and ceramics. It is also used in the semiconductor industry.

- Reactivity: TEOS is a highly reactive substance and can react violently with water to form orthosilicic acid. It is also flammable and can form toxic vapors when heated.
- Melting point: TEOS has a melting point of -78°C.
- Solubility: TEOS is soluble in ethanol and other organic solvents, but practically insoluble in water.
- Health risks: TEOS is irritating to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Prolonged exposure can cause severe eye and skin damage. It can also cause headaches, nausea and dizziness if inhaled.
- Protection and prevention: It is recommended to handle TEOS in a well-ventilated environment and to wear personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, respiratory mask and gloves. In case of contact with skin or eyes, rinse with plenty of water and seek medical advice if necessary.
