Sodium azide is mainly used as a preservative or corrosion inhibitor. It is also used in the manufacture of certain explosives.
Properties of sodium azide (NaN3):
- Reactivity: Sodium azide is a highly reactive compound and can be explosive when shocked, rubbed or in contact with oxidizing agents.
- Melting point: The melting point of sodium azide is around 275°C.
- Solubility: Sodium azide is soluble in water.
- Health risks: Sodium azide is toxic and can cause skin irritation and eye damage. If inhaled or swallowed, it can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea and respiratory problems.
