1-pentanol is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a characteristic alcohol odor. It is used as a solvent, in the manufacture of chemicals and as an ingredient in perfumes and aromas.

Properties of pentan-1-ol (C5H12O):

  • Reactivity: 1-pentanol can react violently with strong oxidizing agents and is flammable.
  • Melting point: The melting point of 1-pentanol is approximately -78°C.
  • Solubility: 1-pentanol is soluble in water in small quantities, but miscible in most organic solvents.
  • Health risks: 1-pentanol may cause skin and eye irritation. Prolonged exposure or high concentrations may cause headaches, dizziness and nausea.
