Hydrazine is a clear liquid with a pungent, ammoniacal odor.  Hydrazine is mainly used as a chemical reagent in the synthesis of certain pharmaceuticals, herbicides and insecticides. It is also used as a rocket fuel and as a blowing agent in certain chemicals.

Properties of hydrazine (N2H4):

  • Reactivity: Hydrazine is a powerful reducing agent and can react violently with many oxidizing compounds.
  • Melting point: The melting point of hydrazine is -51°C.
  • Solubility: Hydrazine is soluble in water, ethanol and ether.
  • Health risks: Hydrazine is highly toxic by inhalation, ingestion and skin contact. It can cause respiratory tract irritation, chemical burns and severe liver damage. It is also classified as a probable human carcinogen.
  • Protection and prevention: It is essential to handle hydrazine in a well-ventilated environment and with adequate personal protective equipment, including gloves, safety glasses and a respirator. If hydrazine comes into contact with skin or eyes, or is inhaled, immediately rinse with plenty of water and seek medical advice. It is also important to comply with current regulations on the handling and storage of hydrazine.
