It is a colorless, flammable liquid.
It is used as a solvent, as an intermediate in the synthesis of organic compounds and as a reagent in organic chemistry.
Properties of cyclopentene (C5H8):
- Reactivity: Slightly reactive, stable under normal conditions. Reacts with strong oxidizing agents.
- Boiling point: 44 °C
- Melting point: -135 °C
- Solubility: Sparingly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, diethyl ether and benzene.
- Health risks: Cyclopentene can cause skin irritation and respiratory disorders if inhaled. It may also have adverse effects on the central nervous system in the event of prolonged exposure or at high concentrations.
- Protection and prevention: Handle with care in a well-ventilated environment, wearing personal protective equipment (gloves, goggles, mask). Store in a cool, dry, dark place.
