Carbon tetrabromide is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a characteristic sweet odor.
CBr4 is mainly used as a solvent in the chemical industry. It can also be used as a reagent in organic synthesis and as a bromide transfer agent.

Properties of carbon tetrabromide (CBr4):
- Reactivity: Carbon tetrabromide is a reactive chemical compound which can react violently with strongly reducing substances. It is also flammable and can form toxic vapors on combustion.
- Melting point: The melting point of carbon tetrabromide is around -47°C.
- Solubility: CBr4 is sparingly soluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether.
- Health risks: Carbon tetrabromide is toxic if inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin. It can cause skin irritation, respiratory problems, eye damage and adverse effects on internal organs in the event of prolonged exposure.
- Protection and prevention: It is important to handle CBr4 in a well-ventilated environment, and to wear personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety glasses and a respirator. In case of contact with skin or eyes, or if inhaled, rinse thoroughly with water and seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
