PCl5 is a white to yellowish solid, usually in the form of crystals or powder. PCl5 is widely used as a reagent in organic chemistry for the chlorination of organic compounds. It is also used in the manufacture of pesticides, plastics and polymers.

Properties of phosphorus pentachloride (PCl5):

Reactivity: PCl5 is a highly reactive and corrosive compound. It reacts violently with water to form hydrochloric acid and phosphoric acid, releasing heat.
Melting point: The melting point of PCl5 is around 160°C.
Solubility: PCl5 is soluble in organic solvents such as benzene, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride, but insoluble in water.
Health risks: PCl5 is extremely toxic and corrosive. It can cause severe chemical burns on contact with skin, eyes and respiratory tract. Inhalation can cause lung and respiratory tract damage. Prolonged exposure may cause neurological and liver disorders.
Protection and prevention: PCl5 must be handled in a well-ventilated environment, with appropriate personal protective equipment (gloves, goggles, lab coat). In the event of skin or eye contact, rinse with plenty of water and seek medical advice immediately. If inhaled, remove from contaminated area and seek medical attention.
