pentaborane (B5H9)
pentaborane (B5H9)
Pentaborane is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a pungent, unpleasant odor.
Pentaborane is used as a reagent in organic chemistry for the synthesis of boron compounds. It has also been used as rocket fuel in the past.
Common synonyms: Pentaboron nonahydride, Stable pentaborane, Pentaborane(9)
Properties of pentaborane (B5H9):
- Reactivity: Pentaborane is very reactive and highly flammable. It reacts violently with air, water and many other chemical compounds.
- Melting point: -92°C
- Solubility: It is soluble in organic solvents such as ether, benzene and chloroform.
- Health risks: Pentaborane is extremely toxic and corrosive to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract. It can cause severe chemical burns and irreversible damage to internal organs if inhaled or ingested.
- Protection and prevention: Pentaborane must be handled in a well-ventilated environment equipped with an appropriate filtration system. Personal protective equipment should be worn, including safety goggles, nitrile gloves and a suitable respirator. In the event of contact with skin or eyes, or in the event of inhalation, rinse with plenty of water and seek medical advice immediately.

Gas detectors for pentaborane (B5H9)
Only a pentaborane (B5H9) gas detector can accurately measure the concentrations of this explosive gas, so we'll be moving towards pentaborane (B5H9) detection in explosivity with measurement as a percentage of LEL (explosimeter).
